Biodiversity, which is essential for supporting life on this planet, continues to be under serious threat. Bad planning, wasteful land-use and intensive farming methods have resulted over the years in the destruction of many natural habitats including wetlands, which many wild species depend upon for their survival.
Not only do the ecological requirements of the species and habitats vary significantly from one to another, but the proposed management options must also take account of economic, social and cultural requirements of the area concerned as well as their regional and local characteristics. It is very well known that the coastal zones face problems of deterioration of their environmental, socio-economic and cultural resources. We are aware of the need to contribute on the identification and promotion of measures to remedy this deterioration and to improve the overall situation in our coastal areas. With the aim to provide technical information about sustainable coastal zone management, and stimulate a broad debate among the various actors involved in the planning, management or use of the coastal area in Foça.Phokaia we undertook the responsibility of organizing a meeting under the topic Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Biodiversity and Marine Environment.
Mediterranean monk seals, caretta-caretta, lesser kestrel, alpine swift, yellow-legged gull and seagrass need protection and conservation in the Foça.Phokaia region but also in other Aegean habitats.
